International Women’s Day is a worldwide celebration of women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. The day also serves as a rallying cry for greater gender equality. Worldwide, there is a lot of activity as people join together to celebrate women’s accomplishments or to march for women’s equality.
International Women’s Day (IWD), observed annually on March 8th, is one of the most important days of the year to:
- Commemorate women’s accomplishments
- Spread awareness about the equality of women
- Advocate for gender equity as soon as possible.
- Raise money for female-focused causes.
History Of Women’s Day
The United Nations recognized the first official International Women’s Day in 1975. (UN).
However, its beginnings may be traced back to 1908, when 15,000 people marched in New York City in support of higher wages and voting rights for women.
IWD was first observed in the United States on February 28, 1909, with nations such as Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland joining in 1911.
Clara Zetkin proposed expanding the event to a worldwide scale at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen in 1910.
Since then, the day has been observed on March 8 every year.
What Colours Are Associated With International Women’s Day?
The colours of International Women’s Day are purple, green, and white. Purple represents justice and dignity. Green represents hope. White denotes purity, which is a contentious idea. The colours were created in 1908 by the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the United Kingdom.
