My Review:

Kaathu Vaakula Rendu Kaadhal by Vignesh Shivan is a lighthearted triangle love story. Firstly, do not take ideology and reasoning seriously if you intend to watch the film because you will end up disappointed.

Ranjankudi Anbarasu Murugesa Boopathy Oohondhiran aka Rambo (Vijay Sethupathi) works as a cab driver during the day and as a pub bouncer at night. He has never experienced love or passion in his life since he feels he brings bad luck to everyone. During the day, he befriends Kanmani (Nayanthara), while at night, he befriends Khatija (Samantha). As luck would have it, they both propose to him on the same day and at the same time, and he accepts both. The rest of the story revolves around how he handles his relationships and the turmoil surrounding each of his girlfriends.

“KVRK seemed like a modern version of the film Rettai Vaal Kuruvi starring Mohan. IYKYK!”

The plot also follows the passionate outburst of Kanmani & Khatija and their desperate attempt to win Rambo by demonstrating who is the best choice among them in a love connection to Rambo to making sure he chooses one of them but Rambo is pretty much interested in both of them!

Vijay Sethupathi’s performance as Rambo lights up the screen. Despite the fact that we’ve seen him in a similar position before, he manages to demonstrate some minor variance for this character in KVRK. The proposal sequences and the meeting moment between Sam and Nayan are both visual treats for the audience. I somehow feel VJS was not the right fit for the film. Amongst Samantha and Nayan being exceptionally good, VJS was definitely seeming below average.

Nayanthara delivered an outstanding performance as Kanmani. She fits perfectly. I did think Samantha would have outshined her though but Nayan did well too! Special mention to the boy who played as Bhargav. Nayan’s scenes with him were too cute.

Samantha as Khatija

Now the moment of spectacular. SAMANTHA RUTH PRABU! The moment she came on screen, it was total knock out for many of us! Seeing Sam in a tamil film after some time was surely a treat. We missed you Sam. Samantha is the show’s star. In the role of Khatija, she sparkles like a jewel and surely outshined in many scenes.

Samantha plays a modern, rich girl whereby she looks glamorous, dashing and hot. All of Sam’s sweetness overflowed in the amorous scenes with Rambo. After a long time, Sam delivered an outstanding performance in this film. She looks lovely in trendy costumes, and her adorable reactions with funny conversation are some of the film’s most engaging moments. Her cute expressions and the way she throws certain dialogues… man its hard not to fall in love with her!

Other Elements

Anirudh’s music adds a lot to this movie. It’s Anirudh’s 25th film which he is scoring, and he’s contributed so much value with his background score and wonderful songs. The song placement in the film is superb, and it works nicely with the script.

The cinematography is lush and entertaining. To illustrate the difference between the two heroines, different colour tones are chosen. Samantha was given strong vibrant tones, but Nayan was given moderate pleasant tones each representing their roles.

Downside of KVRK

  1. There are only a few of sequences with some amusing comedy. And Redin Kingsley appears in those moments.
  2. I did feel something was missing in the film. And I knew it was surely the screenplay. Somehow in the 2nd half, the movie starts to get laggy and pretty slow paced.
  3. There is no chemistry among VJS and Nayan or VJS and Sam. Sam and Nayan had more wavelength to be honest! LMAO
  4. Wikki should do something about the screenplay. Really hope something solid is in line for his next film with Ajith Kumar.

Overall, KVRK is an okay-ish watchable film but could have been better. I still cannot decide if I would want to watch this half baked film again. Personally missing the NRD writer Wikki. The comedy in KVRK was not that great either. Just that Sam and Nayan made this movie a bearable watch. I did enjoy but a void is still present.
